Cancer Battle

Week 5

Week 5
The PET Results
Starting the week with the hard stuff. I am meeting my friend  at the hospital just in case I feel sick or need emotional support everyone was too busy to go with.  I was actually holding up pretty well, walked from the parking lot without holding on to her. It was nice to have someone there.  As we sat in the waiting room, as I talked about what is happening my friend got very emotional and was surprised how well I am doing.  I am trying my best everyday to just hold it together as much as I can.  We got into the room, and my oncologist showed me on the screen step by step PET scan. He explained all the things that did light up which was my thyroid, spine, kidneys.  He said  it is normal to see kidneys light up because the contrast would sit there, thyroid I have many lesions, and he said I have arthritis in my back.  Other than that nothing else!! No spread for now and blood work was good and chromogranin A was not high as well as the urine test.  I am so relieved! Now we can sit down with our kids and talk about this with good news.  I have to go see oncologist every few months with blood work every 3 weeks and every month cat scan until they say no change. The better I do the longer they can spread labs and CT scans for longer periods of time for the next 5 to 7 years.
I can have a optional hormone shot to minimize my symptoms if I choose to get that.  But for now I declined even though they say it may prevent tumors to grow back I would also not have symptoms if they came back so I would not realize that they are back….Hoping my hot flashes will go away don’t want to have more medications in my system.
We ended the week with a hardest conversation with our boys.  We told them I have cancer but  for now I am in remission.  It was hard to change their world just like that.  My eldest was quiet about it and my younger son was tearing up but they took it well, I was crying especially when my husband said this is serious and I can get very sick anytime so enjoy the time we all have together.
